The Silo Project is one of the most effective projects Heart to
Honduras has undertaken for helping break the cycle of poverty
among rural farming families in Honduras and enabling them to
begin to realize a degree of economic advancement.
Traditionally when a Honduran subsistence farmer harvests his
family’s yearly food, he must either sell it or store it in the corner
of his simple hut under a tarp. If he chooses to sell, his produce
will fetch a low price because everyone else will be selling at the
same time. If he chooses to store his food, nearly half of it will be
eaten by bugs and rodents by the time his family has a chance
to use it.

The house-hold size sheet metal silos that Heart to Honduras
makes available to village farmers enable them to store nearly
2,000 pounds of corn or beans in a protected environment, away from rats and bugs, until their families can
use it, or they can sell it during the yearly dry season when food is scarcer and prices higher. As a result
families are better fed and stronger, and the financial gain realized from the sale of their produce can be
used to buy additional seed or livestock, make much-needed improvements to their homes, or help
improve their lives in other significant ways.

Amount needed:     $75.00 per silo
