Our story

Rural Honduras first captured our hearts in 1989.

Where we started.

Since 1989, Heart to Honduras has collaborated and served with the people of the Lake Yojoa Region in rural Honduras.  Thirty years ago, Charlie Smith founded the mission based on a vision to serve the materially poor through the local church, establishing a “model village” that would meet physical and spiritual needs, including access to medicine, clean water, adequate housing, and healthy churches.

Where we've been.

Over three decades, HTH has become a champion for holistic development and a trusted voice in the Honduran and international community.  Through the years, we have expanded our definition of poverty alleviation to a truly integral model, seeking reconciliation of the brokenness in all of us–in relationship with God, ourselves, others, and all of creation.  Our Community Development department is deeply and actively engaged in empowering 15 communities, and our Leadership Formation programs interface with thousands of Honduran youth each year.

Where we're headed.

HTH’s clearly defined Impact Goals guide our work and enlighten our decisions as we continue to journey with the Honduran people in 2022 and beyond.  After suffering two major hurricanes in 2020 and as the country continues to grapple with the effects of a global pandemic, the need for holistic restoration and hope is greater than ever.  Through our Communities of Holistic Impact, Communities of Transformational Unity, Extreme Youth Camp, and Soccer With Values programs, we look forward to a future where our Honduran brothers and sisters can live into their purpose, can celebrate their dignity, and can experience the peace and joy of a place to belong in their homes, churches, schools, and villages.
